In this blog, we look at how often DSE Risk Assessments should be conducted. We know it’s important but often some instances are oveerlooked.

A DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment should be conducted:

  • When a new workstation is set up
  • When a new user starts work
  • When there is a significant change made to an existing workstation or the way it is used
  • If users complain of pain or discomfort
  • If there is a change in the nature of work tasks that significantly affects DSE use
  • If there is a major change to the equipment, furniture, work environment, or software
  • When an employee changes location or workstation
  • If an employee has a new piece of equipment
  • If there is a change in role within the organisation that affects DSE use
  • If there are changes in working patterns, such as a shift to remote or hybrid working

Additionally, it is recommended that DSE assessments be reviewed on a regular basis, even if no specific changes have occurred. Some sources suggest that a new DSE assessment should be undertaken for every employee at least every 2 years as a minimum, while others recommend that DSE assessment training be carried out by new employees and a refresher completed by all employees at least every 12 months.

However, the frequency may vary depending on the company’s policy, any changes in the employee’s health that could affect DSE use, or changes in the work environment. It is important for employers to stay proactive about DSE assessments and encourage staff to raise concerns if they experience discomfort or if their circumstances change.

What are the common issues identified in a DSE assessment?

Common issues identified in a DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment include:

Bad Posture: One of the most frequently encountered problems, bad posture can lead to severe back, neck, shoulder, or arm pain, and in some cases, spine disorders.

Severe Headaches: Long periods spent in front of a screen or screen glare can cause significant headaches.

Musculoskeletal Discomfort: Incorrect use of DSE or poorly set up workstations can result in discomfort in the back, neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands.

Eye Strain and Visual Fatigue: DSE work can be visually demanding, leading to tired eyes, discomfort, temporary short-sightedness, and headaches.

Mental Stress: Both physical and social stressors at work may contribute to muscle and soft tissue tension, increasing the risk of injury.

Upper Limb Problems: Overuse or improper use of DSE can lead to upper limb problems, including conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis.

Backache: Poorly designed workstations or work environments can contribute to backache from overuse or improper use of DSE.

These issues highlight the importance of conducting thorough DSE assessments to identify and mitigate risks associated with DSE use, ensuring the health and well-being of employees.
